Union County Saddle Club News

AUGUST 2010

HI KIDS – ARE YOU READY FOR AUGUST?  I’m not so sure I am – this year seems to be going by to darned fast!  I certainly hope you’ve been able to enjoy our brand new “covered” arena as much as I have – we are certainly blessed……..

Our July Business Meeting was (again) very well attended.  We had to start without Gerald – he was away, taking care of his Mom (but he did show-up as soon as he could.)  We covered quite a few “newsy” items: The lights are now installed and they do a great job; Water has been installed at two corners of the arena with one out in the back-40; The fences are now painted; Now that so many folks are using the arena during “off” hours, it’s doubly important that we pick-up after ourselves (trash, that is):  We will attempt to have two separate Judges at future shows – one for Western and one for Racking; The arena will be closed on Friday evenings BEFORE each show – to allow it to be conditioned for the next day’s show;  Thanks to Carol Demme/Jones for the great bulletin board – feel free to use it (and thank/support Carol in any way you can)

A couple of Old Business items were discussed: We need to keep our horses OFF of the graveled areas around the arena and behind the bleachers (we actually had one horse bite a spectator….); Our first Trail Ride of the year will probably be in September (when it’s not quite so hot); We now have (after our July Show) 344 Club Members.

A few New Business items were also discussed; We had quite a few suggestions for future “improvements” for the arena: such as a sprinkler system for watering the arena, advertisement signs about the arena, etc. – we’re working on all of these; We need to all remember, the JUDGE”S DECISION AT A SHOW IS FINAL – do not run to the sign-up ladies to launch your complaint(s).  If you find or suspect a problem, talk to one of your Club Officers and they will take whatever action is appropriate; One more rule that we need to enforce: the steps to the announcer’s booth are “OFF LIMITS” – Please don’t use them unless you have permission (they’re busy enough up there – they don’t need interruptions!)

Don’t forget to mark your calendars as follows:
-- Thursday, July 29th         -- Special meeting of the UCSC regarding parking for the rodeo @ 7:00P
-- Saturday, August 7th       -- Murray County Saddle Club Open Horse Show (an Association Show)

JULY 2010

HI KIDS – WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT OUR NEW COVERED ARENA?  AIN’T IT GRAND?  I certainly hope you all had the opportunity to see it and feel it first hand last Saturday.  First the “Special Invitation” folks had a blast; then we got to take part in the Grand Opening Ceremonies and finally our first Open Horse Show of the year (which was also an Association Show.) What a day – long but great!  We think we broke our previous record number of class sign-ups!

Our June Business Meeting was very well attended (standing room only).  We did get quite a bit accomplished – especially those items necessary to prepare for the big show on the 19th.  One particular item was a large THANK YOU from Gerald for the great turnout for our Tuesday night work party.  We were able to get the kitchen and b-rooms ready, get the sign-up/announcer’s house ready for action and, let’s not forget the rocks.  We picked up rocks and rocks and rocks and rocks ..….. but all of the sweat was well worth the trouble when we saw how well everything went on the big show day!

Hopefully, you all had a chance to enjoy all the goodies putout by our
concession folks – a great job, kids.  The “home-made ice-cream” folks also added a great touch (and a good taste).

NOW FOR THE BAD STUFF – Sunday afternoon I took a tour of our beautiful new arena grounds to see how well we all did about picking-up our trash.  Let me tell you, “we” didn’t do very well!  Either you-all will have to do a better job of picking-up after yourselves OR I will have to buy a bigger truck (I thought I was going to fill it!)  Everything from broken sun-glasses, broken tack, shoes, cans, bottles, paper of every sort, old shirts, etc., etc.  There is NO EXCUSE FOR THIS!  It’s just not that much trouble to put your trash in the containers provided (or take it home with you)!  We have a beautiful new arena (and grounds) and it’s up to us (all of us) to do our part to keep it that way.  I forgot to mention our “smokers” – the bleachers at the northeast corner must have been “the smoking section” – the ground under them was covered with butts.#@^*#!  My thanks to the Bar M Tack folks, who helped with the pick-up job.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars as follows:
-- Saturday, July 10th   -- Copper Basin Saddle Club - St. Jude’s Fun Show
-- Thursday, July 15th  -- UCSC Business Meeting @ the UCSC clubhouse @ 7:00PM sharp
-- Saturday, July 17th   -- UCSC Open Horse Show - sign-up @ 10AM, start @ 11AM (John Holmes, Judge)
-- Saturday, July 24th    -- Gilmer County Saddle Club Horse Show
-- Saturday, July 24th    -- White County Open Horse Show
-- Friday, July 30th        -- Rodeo at UCSC – gates open @ 6PM, start @ 8PM
-- Saturday July 31st     -- Rodeo at UCSC – gates open @ 6PM, start @ 8PM

JUNE 2010

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?  June is here and so is the new “COVERED ARENA”!  Be sure to come out and help us “celebrate” a brand new chapter in Union County Saddle Club history1

In case you haven’t noticed, the new Union County Covered Arena is actually in place!  The scoring/sign-up house is almost ready for use, the arena fencing is soon to be installed and everything else will be ready in time for our first show.  Be sure to mark your calendars for June 19th, the Arena Grand Opening, our Special Invitation Show (starts (@10AM) and our first Open Horse Show of the year (sign-up @ 12 noon / start @ 1PM).  This will also be our first Blue Ridge Mountains Horse Exhibitors Association Sanctioned Show.  This will certainly be a GRAND DAY and I hope you all will be able to be there to enjoy it with us.  Be aware, the parking situation may be slightly confusing for a show or two – so be sure to come early enough to figure out the best place to park, etc., etc.

Our
May Business Meeting was “sorta” well attended.  We spent a bit of time discussing the new arena features, the upcoming June 19th program and a number of items related to the future arena scheduling operation.  Be prepared -- we will probably be calling a few “work days” to get everything as ready to go as best we can before June 19th.  Our Concession folks have announced a new item on their already awesome menu – home made B-B-Q.  Our first Trail Ride of the year has not yet been scheduled – will be soon.  We also relished the good news that Nicki and her new baby are doing great (another barrel-racer to watch-out for).  It was reported that membership cards had been sent to 191 members @ 74 addresses, as of that evening.  If you haven’t renewed your membership, please try to get it done before the first show “rush”.

It’s worth mentioning again -- if you find any problem(s) with your name(s) spelling, addresses, e-mails or if your phone number changes, PLEASE let me know so I can get/keep our records up-to-date.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars as follows:
-- Saturday, June 5th -- Murray County Saddle Club Open Horse Show – sign-up @ 3:30PM
-- Saturday, June 5th -- Copper Basin Saddle Club Open Horse Show
-- Thursday, June 17th -- UCSC Business Meeting @ the UCSC clubhouse @ 7:00PM sharp
-- Saturday, June 19th -- Special Invitation Show @ 10AM – lunch @ 12 noon
-- Saturday, June 19th -- Open Horse Show (an Association show) – sign-up @ noon, start @ 1PM
-- Saturday, June 26th -- Gilmer County Saddle Club Open Horse Show – sign-up @ noon
-- Saturday, June 26th -- White County Open Horse Show

Be sure to keep your eyes open to our web site www.unioncountysaddleclub.org for all of the latest poop (no pun intended)!  Also note the link to our face book page.

MAY, 2010

Hi Kids.  It’s hard to imagine – April is almost gone.  It finally looks like our weather is starting to get a little more horse friendly.  Although we missed our hoped-for opening show date (May 15th) the New Arena Project is finally starting to show progress.  With a little luck, we hope to make the June 15th date – our Arena Grand Opening, our Special Invitational Show, our first Open Horse Show of the season (which will also be our first Association Show) – a real big day for us all!  If for some reason we aren’t able to make the June 15th date, we will do the best we can – the new covered arena will be worth the wait.  You may have heard that the TVA won the “battle of the pole” – after agreeing to move the “offending pole” -- so we could locate the new arena where the old one used to be – they (the TVA) backed out!  The contractor immediately dug-up the concrete that he had already poured, filled in the holes, re-graded to a new (original) layout/plan and he has since poured all of the footings in their new locations.  Real progress should be seen in the very near future.

Our
April Business Meeting was a lively one – that’s when we got the news about the TVA reversal.  The rest of the meeting was fairly routine.  Why don’t you try to make one or all of our future meetings – who knows, you may have an idea or two that can benefit all of us.  We can always use help!

Be sure to checkout our updated web site www.UnionCountySaddleClub.org  – you’ll find our projected 2010 schedule and a great new photo gallery of 2009 events.  Also, be sure to note, and support, our Club “Sponsors”.  You will also find a link to our new Face Book page – join in and enjoy!

ONE MORE ITEM OF INTEREST:  Your 2010 MEMBERSHIP CARDS are included with this mailed newsletter.  If you haven’t paid your 2010 dues, you didn’t receive this in the mail!  If you find a problem with any name spelling, or incorrect addresses, PLEASE let me know so I can get our records  up-to-date.  I will e-mail this newsletter to our total e-mail list (2009 and 2010 members) within the next day or two – maybe the non-payers will get the message and re-up.!

Don’t forget to mark your calendars as follows:

-- Saturday, May 1st – Copper Basin Open Horse Show (Association show)
-- Saturday, May 8th – Murray County Open Show
– Thursday, May 29th -- UCSC Business Meeting @ the UCSC clubhouse @ 7:00P sharp
-- Saturday, May 22nd – White County Open Horse Show
-- Saturday, May 22nd – Gilmer County Open Horse Show
-- Saturday, May 29th – Memorial Day Parade in Blairsville

APRIL 2010

Hi Kids.  Can you believe it?  It’s almost April!  Are you ready for this year’s Show Season?  If not, it’s time to hurry-up and get with it.

Our March Business Meeting was one of the best attended meetings yet – way to go guys and gals.  It’s an age old fact – you’ll only get out of the Club what you put into it!  Dr. Zagar gave us the latest poop (no pun intended) regarding the subject of “worming.”  When to, how to, how to tell who needs it and how often -- an interesting subject for us horse-owners.

Gerald also got the latest info regarding the
new covered arena – the TVA has, reportedly, agreed to move the offending pole but we’re still waiting for this in writing.  As soon as the letter arrives, we expect to see some real progress!  If you’ve driven by the Saddle Club in the last couple of days, you probably noticed that the building is on site -- but in piles rather than in place.  Hopefully, we’ll soon see the footings being poured and the piles of building parts beings put together and bolted in place.  If you doubt that the new covered arena will be in place and ready in time for our May 15 show – join the crowd! All we can do is hope and pray.  Rest assured, as soon as the arena is ready, we’ll shuffle our dates as required to get the season underway and in full swing.

Be sure to checkout our
updated web site UnionCountySaddleClub.org  You’ll find our projected 2010 schedule and a great new photo gallery of our 2009 events.  Also, be sure to note, and support, our Club “Sponsors”.  You will also find a link to our new Face Book page – join in and enjoy!

One more reminder:  Your 2010 MEMBERSHIP is due!  If you haven’t paid your dues by the end of this month, you will NOT receive you 2010 Membership Card along with everyone else and you will soon be removed from our mailing list (we can afford to keep sending stuff out to non-members.

PLEASE REMEMBER -- everyone is required to fill-out a NEW APPLICATION FORM FOR 2010.  Please print clearly (so I can actually read everything) and return it to me as soon as you possibly can.  BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS (if you have one)!

Don’t forget to mark your calendars as follows:
-- Saturday, April 3rd – Murray County Saddle Club Open Horse Show
-- Saturday, April 10th – Copper Basin Saddle Club Open Horse Show
– Thursday, April 15th -- UCSC Business Meeting @ the UCSC clubhouse @ 7:00P sharp
-- Saturday, April 17th – UCSC Trail Ride (time and place to follow)
-- Saturday, April 17th -- White County Georgia Mountain Association Sanctioned Show
-- Saturday, April 24th – White County Open Horse Show

MARCH 2010

Hi Kids.  Are you ready for March madness?  I certainly am and I’m ready for the snow and cold weather to stop so we can get on with this year’s horsing-around!

Our February Business Meeting not as well attended as we would like – but – Mother Nature is still socking it to us – as soon as the weather improves, we would expect more folks to show up.

We did get some bad news – our VP (Bill Jones) had to have open-heart surgery to do a triple by-pass.  He seems to be doing fine but he had to spend a couple days in the ICU.  Please remember him and his family in your prayers.

We also received an update regarding the
new arena “progress”.  Test holes have been dug and as soon as the results come back, we should start seeing some visual progress.  The building is now being built and the arena fence material is already here.  The TVA has agreed to move the pole that currently encroaches on the new arena position to the south -- out of the way.  Until they get this done, the builder will work from the north end.  The soundman, that did the Chatsworth Arena, has agreed to submit a price quote.

One more newsy item, our
2010 UCSC Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, December 11th.

Be sure to checkout our
updated web site – you’ll find our 2010 schedule and a great new photo gallery of 2009 events – a good job, Art.

PLEASE Note:  Your 2010 MEMBERSHIP is due.  To make it easier on myself, I expect to make-up and mail 2010 Membership Cards for all club members who are paid-up by the 15th of March.  If you pay after that date, you will still get your card(s) one at a time -- but remember, your entrée fees will be larger if you are not a “member in good standing” by the first show (why wait ‘till then?)  Do it in advance to make it easier on the sign-up ladies.

PLEASE REMEMBER -- everyone is required to fill-out a new APPLICATION FORM FOR 2010.  Please print clearly (so I can actually read everything) and return it to me as soon as you can.  BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS (if you have one)!

Don’t forget to mark your calendars as follows:

-- Thursday, March 18th  – UCSC Business Meeting @ the UCSC clubhouse @ 7:00P sharp.  Dr.
Zagar will speak to us about “de-worming”.
-- Saturday, March 27th – White County Open Horse Show

FEBRUARY 2010

HAPPY FEBRUARY!  I hope you have managed to struggle through the winter weather (so far).

Our January Business Meeting was reasonably well-attended – considering the weather.  We did get a few things done.  Gerald gave us an update regarding the new arena progress (still waiting for the final word from the TVA)?  We still expect that it will be ready for our first show on the 15th of MAY.  The materials for the arena and the railing have been ordered.  We had a discussion about the difficulty involved with determining whether or not a sign-up-er or is not a member of UCSC – the Secretary agreed to produce an easier-to-read list for the sign-up ladies (gotta make the type larger for those older folks).  Dr. Zager will talk to us at our March meeting.   Jean Harkins will try to reserve the Civic Center earlier in the month for next year’s Christmas Party – hopefully, it will make it a little easier for us all schedule our holiday doings – she will try for the 4th of December.

JANUARY 2010

HAPPY NEW YEAR Y-ALL!   Well we made it – we “survived another UCSC year and, I for one, am really looking forward to a brand new, wreck-free, 2010.

Our December Business Meeting (our Christmas Party) was a roaring success – very well attended with great food and entertainment.  Perhaps the best part of the afternoon’s entertainment was the interplay between our auctioneer (Lonnie) and our President on stage during the auction itself.  By the way, we did pretty well at the action for the Gary Jones Surgery Fund.  Between the contributions and the auction itself, we raised around  $2,500.00 to help Gary pay for the surgery he so badly needs to resolve his medical problem.

Gary called, the other day, and asked me to sent out a “
BIG THANK YOU” to the Club and to all those who made donations and offered bids at the auction.  It is very much appreciated by the Jones family.  It also made your Club President and Officers very proud  -- you all came through once again!  Well done!

As you know, our
2009 Season saw quite a few weather “interruptions” but we still had a blast at the shows we were able to hold/attend.  Hopefully, 2010 will bring a bigger and better season than we’ve ever seen – especially in our new covered arena!  This new arena-complex should bring folks from everywhere -- attendance like we’ve never seen before and it should also bring quite a new variety of events.  As soon as the politicians get through squabbling about right-of-way and all that stuff, the actual work should start and move along with haste.

Our congratulations go out to all those
Yearly “High-Point” Trophy Winners -- handed out at the Christmas party.  Those of you that may have earned trophies but we not at the party, contact our Jean Harkins (706-879-9353) and she will make arrangements to get your trophies to you – OR – drop by our next meeting and pick them up there.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars as follows:
-- Thursday, January 21st – UCSC Business Meeting @ the UCSC clubhouse @ 7:00P sharp

PLEASE Note
(as I mentioned in the last few newsletters): ALL UCSC CLUB MEMBERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO FILL-OUT A BRAND NEW MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FORM FOR 2010.  PLEASE fill one out (clearly, so I can read it) and return it to me as soon as you can.  If you need a copy of the 2010 application form, you can print one off of our web site or you can contact me and I’ll give or send you as many as you need.  BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS (if you have one)!

DECEMBER 2009

Well, we did it – we almost got through another UCSC year – as soon as we celebrate the end of the year at our Christmas party!  This has been a good year – even with the multitude of show cancellations.  We’re certainly looking forward to a great year in our new covered arena.  Be sure to drive by every now and then, during the off-season, to watch the progress.

Our
November Business Meeting was an important one – we did get a few business items accomplished and then the main task for this meeting -- to nominate and elect our 2010 Club Officers!  If you weren’t there, your voice wasn’t heard so don’t complain if your favorite didn’t get elected.  Refer to the list on page 2 of this newsletter for election results.

Our last
Trail Ride of the season went off without a hitch -- not very well attended -- but those who did show had a great ride.  By the way, our Trail Master has developed some rather serious health issues that will require surgery, so watch and listen for any way you can help.  We are in the process of setting-up a “Gary Jones Hospital Fund” and we hope you-all can/will help.

Be sure to make plans to attend our
UCSC Christmas Party and Club Officer Installation.   It will  be held at the Union County Civic Center at 1:00 PM on Saturday, the 19th day of  December, 2009 (sorry, I messed-up on my last newsletter and showed the date as the 17th.).  The Club will provide the meats, the drinks and the tableware – you bring the rest (in the form of your favorite covered dishes) for all to share.  It looks like we may have music and even some line-dancing lessons – so -- come one come all!

Don’t forget to mark your calendars as follows:
-- December 5th – Blairsville Christmas Parade
-- December 19th – UCSC Christmas Party & 2010 Officer Installation

PLEASE Note
(as I mentioned in last month’s newsletter): ALL UCSC CLUB MEMBERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO FILL-OUT A BRAND NEW MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FORM FOR 2010.  PLEASE fill one out (clearly, so I can read it) and return it to me ASAP.  If you need a copy of the 2010 application form, you can print one off of our web site or you can contact me and I’ll give or send you as many as you need.  BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS (if you have one)!
