Union County Saddle Club News

JULY/AUGUST, 2008
Hi kids – happy horse’n around – hopefully your life is moving along as smoothly as mine has been.  First-off, PLEASE add the following dates to your calendar:

 02AUG08 – Rodeo at the Saddle Club, starting at 8:00 PM
15AUG08 – UCSC Monthly Meeting, 7:00 PM
23AUG08 – UCSC Open Horse Show – sign-up @ 11:00AM / start @ 12:00Noon

 Our thanks goes out to our volunteer “rock-collectors” – Sunday afternoon, they picked-up and disposed-of   loose rocks in and about the arena – a great and much appreciated work-project -- it should make it a lot easier on our horses.  Our July 17th business meeting dealt with quite a few interesting subjects;

* Question: Can our August Open Horse Show start at 4:00 PM (in lieu of 12:00 Noon) – to help us all deal a little better with the expected heat?  It’s up to the show committee.

* It was agreed that double points will be given to all those barrel-racers who signed-up for the last show
   but were unable to run because of the rain that came!  We have all the sign-up sheets from the last show
   and will use them at the next..

* The championship trophies for the past few shows have been ordered and they will be awarded as soon as
   they arrive.

* The NRHA (National Racking Horse Association) has approached us with the idea of “hosting”
   one of  their shows during next year’s schedule.  After a little discussion, we approved this proposal,
   with the understanding that all of the necessary arrangements can be made and agreed upon in a timely
   manner.

*  Note: We need UCSC member/volunteers to help-out at the rodeo (parking cars, concessions, etc..)

JULY NEWSLETTER

Hi kids – I have an important announcement to make:  if you haven’t paid your 2008 dues, you aren’t reading this!  One other announcement, before I move on to other subjects -- our July 5th make-up show has been cancelled -- for quite a number of reasons (too many other conflicting events; too hot for the horses; too many folks will be out of town or at other 4th of July activities, etc.) – it will be rescheduled at a later date.  Be sure to put a few dates on you calendar:

·         17JUL08 – UCSC July Meeting @ 7:00PM @ club house

·         21AUG08 – UCSC August Meeting @ 7:00PM @ club house

·         23AUG08 – UCSC Open Horse Show – sign-up @ 11:00AM / start      12:00Noon

 You will probably notice – the UCSC house (concession stand, bathrooms, meeting room, etc.) has been cleaned, water-proofed, painted, etc.—looks a lot better and should be much more pleasant to use (hopefully, we’ll even get the window fixed soon).  Our June business meeting was typically, poorly attended but those of us that did make it managed to deal with a few important items:  We now have a new (at least new to us) tractor to do all the various chores around the arena – it will be stored at Double C until a proper storage place can be provided at the arena site.  We, unfortunately, had to cancel the July 5th show (see words above)  We may have some good news soon about “Team Penning” events at the arena – plans are in the works.

As much as it pains me to bring this subject up again, if you or your group use the arena – great, that’s what it here for – BUT –
PLEASE clean-up after yourselves.  I seem to be spending far too much of my personal time picking-up cans, wrappers, discarded tack, toys, etc., etc.  Our “friendly bush-hogger” has to stop and clean up the mess before he can make his passes and do his thing.  That shouldn’t be necessary!  Why can’t you (we) spend the couple minutes it takes to pick up what’s not supposed to be there or, better yet, don’t drop it there in the first place – that’s what those big barrels are for!

JUNE, 2008
Hi kids – can you believe it, another month has come and gone – I hope every thing is moving along OK! Sorry about the cancellation of the 4-H Fun Show.  As soon as a reschedule date is known, I’ll pass it on! Our last business meeting was somewhat poorly attended but a few interesting items came up.  You-all ought to come out and take part (next meeting is Thursday 19JUN08 at 7:00 PM) – we can use the help!  The “biggie” for the May meeting dealt with one of our favorite subjects – non-payment of dues!  I’m sure  those of you who have renewed are tired of hearing about it but, the perpetrators still haven’t got the message – and now, the age-old “monster” has reared it’s ugly head at our first show!  How many times will it take? IF YOU HAVEN’Y PAID YOUR DUES, YOU MUST PAY THE EXTRA $2.00 PER EVENT WHEN YOU SIGN-UP – AND – ANY POINTS EARNED DURING ANY EVENT YOU TAKE PART IN WILL NOT BE COUNTED TOWARD THE YEAR-END AWARDS! @#!#@&*  How clear is that?  It would not be fair to make exceptions – the rule is the rule and has been the rule and it must be applied to everyone!  Hopefully, this is the last time I will ever have to write about this subject again (I’m running out of printer ink!).  If you have a problem with this subject, PLEASE send me an e-mail, a letter or give me a call. Although I have been authorized to finally stop sending newsletters to non-paid-up folks, I’ve decided to make an exception – one more time – because of the above-mentioned “problem”.  It has been decided that we will not take part in the proposed association of local saddle clubs (at least for this year) due to lack of interest by our membership and for scheduling difficulties.  I only received two (2) positive responses to my questionnaire in the last newsletter.  Maybe we can reconsider it in the future?  One of the new SIGNS (announcing our next show) has “disappeared” – it simply wasn’t there when Art went to retrieve it from where he put it!  If you run across the sign, be sure to let us know where it is, etc.  The idea of having more “English Style” events at our shows has been reviewed – all we need is to have more interested entries and we will add it to our future shows. Be sure to put June 28
th on your calendar – our next Open Horse Show – sign-up is at 11:00 AM and show starts at 12:00 Noon.  See you all there!
Once again, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions regarding the Saddle Club, the way things are done or the things that we do, please don’t hesitate to call your President, Lonny Marcus @ (706) 379-3810, your Vice President, Lloyd Martin @ (706) 835-1605 or call me (your Secretary – Jim Holzinger) @ (706) 781- 6449.  If you wish to mail any checks, forms, comments or anything else, please send them to:

                                   EQUINE LICENSE PLATE

In this month’s Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin published by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, there is an article about a new equine license plate that is now available for your automobile.  There has to be at least a 1000 plates pre-sold in order for the manufacturing process to begin.  To order the plate, just go to your local county motor vehicle tag office and fill out an application for a Special Interest License Plate. You will need to indicate the name of the tag you are requesting which is "Georgia Equine Industry" and pay a $25.00 one time manufacturing fee.  This will be applied to your tag or it will be refunded if they don't get the 1,000 plate requirement. Just be sure to obtain a receipt of your payment. Proceeds from sales of this tag will provide needed funds for promotion, research and educational programs for the state's equine industry.

                         NEWSLETTER     MAY, 2008 (second edition)
Hi kids – as you probably noticed, I sent the last newsletter quite a bit early than usual in order to announce the rescheduled date of our “Special Invitation” show – hence , this newsletter is titled “(second edition)”.

I hope you enjoyed our first show-day as much as I did.  The
“Special Invitation” portion of the day was really well attended -- when you consider the weather and the weather forecast.  We all had a blast helping our guests enjoy themselves – I think we were successful!

Our first
Open Horse Show also came off very well, again considering the weather.  It appeared that quite a few folks stayed home because of the impending rain, but Mother Nature was nice enough to hold off the rain and everyone who did show had a ball.  I hope you made it -- but, if you didn’t, I hope to see you at our next event(s).

Speaking of “next event” – it will be the
4-H Fun Show on the 17th of May.  Sign-up will be at 9:00A and they will start at 10:00A.  Y-all come and enjoy a fun day.  Our next business meeting will be held at 7:00P on the third Thursday, the 15th of MAY.  Come on by – we welcome your input!  We do have a few “interesting items” to talk about.  One will be the proposal to join an association of local Saddle Clubs – your response to my inquiry in the last newsletter was somewhat under whelming (one e-mail was received)– we’ll see what gets decided??

Another important item that will be discussed is
UN-PAID DUES!  It needs to be recognized that any points earned/recorded in any of our timed events can only be counted (toward the year-end totals) IF your dues have been paid.   New memberships are due on January 1st of each year.  If you haven’t renewed your membership, your times won’t count!  Quite a few of the folks who participated in last Saturday’s events were not paid up members.  We need to get this situation resolved immediately (or sooner) so we don’t end-up with the mess we ran into at the end of last year!

Here I go again – I have  decided to extend the deadline for newsletter mailing to unpaid folks for one more month -- because of the above noted “point problem”.  Please send your renewals post-haste.  Don’t just wait for the next show – one stamp won’t break you!

Once again, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions regarding the Saddle Club, the way things are done or the things that we do, please don’t hesitate to call your
President, Lonny Marcus @ (706) 379-3810, your Vice President, Lloyd Martin @ (706) 835-1605 or call me (your Secretary – Jim Holzinger) @ (706) 781- 6449.  If you wish to mail any checks, forms, comments or anything else, please send them to:

MAY, 2008
I know --- I screwed-up the date of next month’s show in my last newsletter – but, everyone knows it isn’t going to be held on Monday.  The Open Horse Show will start at 1:00PM on Saturday the 3rd of May  -- sign-up will begin at 12:00 Noon  -- directly after the rescheduled SPECIAL INVITATION SHOW that will start at 10:00 o’clock and close at Noon.  Once again, if you know of anyone who should be invited to this Special Invitation Show, please invite them -- I’ll do the rest by mail.
Our April meeting was fairly well attended and quite a few items were covered.  One proposal came up –
we need your input!  It has been suggested that an association of local Saddle Clubs (Blairsville, Elijah, Chatsworth & Midway) be formed and that they each have 2 shows each year for all association member- clubs to participate.  Points will be awarded toward an association championship.  If you think we should consider or not consider joining such an association, please let me know, either by mail or e-mail.
I hope the little “red-lettered nasty-gram” (sent to all those on our mailing list who hadn’t yet paid their 2008 dues) didn’t offend anyone – but, we can’t keep spending all that postage on the entire list forever.   Please renew soon, if you’re going to.  Because of the cancellation of last months show, I’ll send one more mailing to the entire list – but “that’s all folks”  – there ain’t no more!
Don’t miss the “4-H Horse Handler’s Fair”, to be held from 10:00AM to 4:00PM on the 26th of April at the Union County Saddle Club arena.  There will be an admission of $15.00 per person or $45.00 for a family (4) pack.  The action-packed day will include a full schedule of events, lectures & demonstrations plus a delicious Bar-B-Que luncheon.  Attendees will also have a chance to win $100.00 in the Poker Run.
Be sure to remember our May UCSC Meeting at 7:00PM on Thurs. the 15th.   Y’all come -- take an active part in your Saddle Club – who knows maybe you’ll have a good idea that someone hasn’t thought of!
Keep a close eye on our web site www.unioncountysaddleclub.org for all the latest club news and happenings – a veritable plethora of information!

EDITORIAL COMMENT:  If you use the arena and surrounding area, be sure to clean-up any mess   you made, pick-up any “stuff” you left, move the barrels back to where you found them, etc., etc., etc.  It’s your arena – it’s up to you to keep it clean!
Once again, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions regarding the Saddle Club, the way things are done or the things that we do, please don’t hesitate to call your President, Lonny Marcus @ (706) 379-3810, your Vice President, Lloyd Martin @ (706) 835-1605 or call me (your Secretary – Jim Holzinger) @ (706) 781- 6449

SEE YA AT THE SADDLE CLUB

March 2008
NOTE: MARCH 15th WILL BE OUR “WORK-DAY” – PLEASE COME OUT TO HELP!  We hope everything is going well with you-all so far this year – it sure is with the Saddle Club!  Be  sure to take a close look at our brand new WEB-SITE.  Simply type: “UNIONCOUNTYSADDLECLUB.ORG” and enjoy!  Our thanks go out Art Miller (and his web-site designer, Janice Boling) for a great job!

 I’m still hoping for quite a few more membership renewals & dues – PLEASE try to get this paperwork out of the way ASAP.  This may be the last newsletter you receive if you don’t get your renewal in…. Once again, if you have an e-mail address, please let me know what it is so I can use it!

It is my intention to mail-out the 2008 membership cards next month after most of the renewals are in.  Our February meeting was held on the 21st at the Saddle Club house.  The turn out was slightly under- whelming but so was the weather  ….… although, quite a few items were handled/discussed/etc.
* The big item was the “birth” of the Union County Saddle Club
web-site;
* The
Show Schedule for the year was also “born” (please note the next page and/or the web-site)
* The subject of
“under 18 handling of stallions,..,” was revisited and clarified: stallions may be ridden by under 18 folks ONLY in single-horse/speed events (barrels, poles, etc.) and then only if an adult handles the horse until it enters the arena;
* The folks who ran the
snack-bar last year will do it again this year – SO – please support them and use the snack-bar regularly;
* Another big one
:  Saturday, March 15th will be our first “WORK DAY” of the year – PLEASE come by between 9:00AM until when-ever, to help us do whatever is necessary to get the arena and surroundings ready for the first event of the year!

I have to apologize for not noting the date of our February meeting in the last newsletter (it  probably has something to do with this old brain).  The March meeting will be held on Thursday, the 20th at 7:00pm.  As you know, it will always be held on the 3rd Thursday of the month.

February 2008 Newsletter

Happy Valentine's Day you-all – this would be a real good time to buy your honey a new horse (or something for her existing horse) - that would be a great Valentine's Day present, don't you think?

I'm still looking for / waiting for / hoping for a deluge of membership renewals & dues – they're certainly coming in slower than I expected. I'm anxious to get all this paperwork done before our show-season starts and the year really gets busy! Come on kids, stamps are cheap!

We were deeply saddened by the passing of Wayne Seaborn (a long-time member & supporter of the Union County Saddle Club). Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Seaborn family. Please note the attached/enclosed benefit flyer.

Our first meeting of the year was held on January 17 th at the Saddle Club house. We had a pretty good turn out and had quite a few lively discussions about: the year-end point process; the coming year show-schedule; the priority list of arena improvements for the SPLOST committee; last year's show cancellations (the reasons for and the difficulties that resulted) and we even talked about the old “Trail Ride Committee” - something the Saddle Club hasn't had for a while - if we get enough interest, who knows?

If, for some reason or another, you failed to receive a copy of your 2008 membership form (it came with the January newsletter), just give me a call at (706) 781-6449 or send an E-mail to keyholz@aol.com   and I'll send you another. If you have an E-mail available to you, please let me know what it is - (write it or say it very clearly ) so I can send future newsletters, etc., electronically! A few E-mails were returned from my first “E-mail offering” – so I did re-send a few by snail-mail. I hope to get them right next time.

Once again, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions regarding the Saddle Club, the way things are done or things we do, please don't hesitate to call your President, Lonny Marcus @ (706) 379-3810, y our Vice President, Lloyd Martin @ (706) 835-1605 or call me (your Secretary – Jim Holzinger) @ (706) 781- 6449. If you wish to mail any checks, forms, comments or anything else, please send them to:
